Mercedes-Benz recently launched its first in-house battery recycling facility in Kuppenheim, Germany, marking a significant stride in sustainable automotive production. This new plant uses an innovative hydrometallurgical process, enabling the company to reclaim over 96% of raw materials from end-of-life batteries. Initially, in a pilot phase, the factory aligns with Mercedes-Benz’s long-term goal of achieving a “closed-loop” system in battery materials, which would reduce resource dependency and lower the carbon footprint of electric vehicles.
By 2030, Mercedes-Benz plans for all EV batteries to contain a high proportion of recycled material, solidifying Kuppenheim as a pioneering location in green automotive technology. This initiative contributes to Germany’s commitment to sustainability, as the plant will also create jobs in the region and support the EU’s circular economy targets.
Could Kuppenheim become a blueprint for other German cities aiming to support local industry while promoting environmental responsibility?
